March 2018 News & Notes!

Hi Friends,

Hope you've had a delightful St. Patrick's Day weekend! I wanted to share some news with you.

First, the title track to "Vision Hazy" will be featured on the upcoming 2018 Singer-Songwriter Cape May compilation disc! Take a look here at all the artists who were nominated. I am excited and eager to be a part of SS Cape May this year!

Speaking of Cape May, I'll be playing 2 late-night sets this week (3/23 at Carney's and 3/24 at The Rusty Nail). My intention is to make both shows completely different sets (no song repeats)! And perhaps test out a newbie if the mood strikes. :-)

Also, the music video for Vision Hazy is in the can! Hoping to share it for your viewing pleasure this Spring!

More later!

February makes me shiver...

Greetings Folks!

It's been a quiet, yet busy 2018 so far musically. A few things I'd like to share.

Recently, Vision Hazy got a mention out of the blue on Twitter from Country Fried Rock as a record to check out!

On Jan 23, Vision Hazy also got a spin on DC Music Rocks - a radio program on 96.7 WERA in Arlington, VA during "drive time." Woo hoo!

I'm currently putting the finishing touches on a music video for "Vision Hazy." Really psyched to share that with you when it's ready!

If you're in Alexandria, come out to Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market tomorrow (2/11) between 10-12 noon. 4MR is a wonderful little market on Mt. Vernon Avenue down the street from The Birchmere.

I'm also pleased to be a performer at this year's Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg, PA! Go here for all the details.

Will have some more announcements your way soon! Till then, stay cozy.

August 2017: New Single, Social Media Updates, Shows!

Hello Folks!

Hope you’re enjoying these last licks of Summer. I’d like to give you the skinny on what’s happening in my world, musically speaking.

New single out / early reviews of “Time Travels”

You may have heard I have a new single out called “Time Travels.” You can listen to it here to whet your appetite for my next EP Vision Hazy, out on Friday, September 29th!

Time Travels has received a few early reviews, both of which are really positive. A few excerpts below…

Nooga.com’s Notes From Left of the Dial, 8/4/17
“Tarka explores a collapsing mental head space and the ensuing devastation brought on by physical deterioration. His power-pop tendencies act as a foil to the darker emotions that swirl around and inhabit the notes and melodies of the song. But he doesn’t lay in this melancholy without a sense of resolution—he turns a dire sense of inevitability into a hopeful outlook on the future. The drums splash and echo while his voice works its way inside a collection of wavering organ lines and shimmering guitar rhythms. There’s an infectious optimism that eventually emerges, an idea that while days will be dark and hearts will be broken, there will come a time when the sun’s light will reach your face again.”

Independent Clauses, 8/22/17
“Here’s some punchy indie-pop that fans of the Weakerthans will immediately sit up and take notice of. The guitars and vocals come together beautifully.”

“What’s in My Record Player?” Thursday social media Series
New Tuesday Series: “Artists who inspire me to do good work.”

As you might have seen online, I like to do weekly (Thursday) installments of “what’s in my record player?” It’s been fun and I plan to keep that going on fb and instagram. Follow along in either space. Facebook: @MattTarkaMusic Instagram: MattTarka
I have fired up a new series on Tuesdays – “Artists who inspire me to do good work.”
This past Tuesday, I featured my friend and Chelmsford, MA songwriter Seth Balestrieri. Google him. He writes great hooks.

MATT TARKA ANNOUNCES SEPTEMBER 29, 2017 EP RELEASE

The upcoming powerpop EP from Matt Tarka, Vision Hazy, is a rotating photo album of bright memories and golden nostalgia that winds along an open road. The EP was mixed by Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Dinosaur Jr.) and is due out September 29. The first single, “Time Travels” is available as an approved downloadable mp3.   Listen Here

Vision Hazy is a collection of the unexpected experiences, and the single delves deeper into a physical dilemma. Soaring harmonies and upbeat instrumentation will leave your heart racing through the infectious melody. Yet the lyrics talk about a more somber and difficult subject. Tarka explains, “I wrote this song from the point of view of someone who is coming to grips with losing a family member suffering from dementia. In turn, someone with the disease has flashes of being present, but is being held captive in their own personal hell. It’s such a devastating experience for anyone involved in being a caregiver or offering support for someone with dementia.”

The EP has melodic highs and sentimental moments of contemplation. While primarily upbeat, harmony-driven powerpop, the sunset escape of “Selling Roses” smooths out an Americana landscape. Others like “Midnight Sun” highlight the vulnerability and honesty in Tarka’s voice and delivery. Perfect for the open road, or the warm embrace of a turntable, Vision Hazy is a wind drifting off somewhere without expectation or pretense.
